BIDDY ROSE

I work with different textures of clays and surface. I enjoy the tactile meditative approach in making pinch pots and hand coiling. Smoking low fired clay pieces in sawdust gives a direct connection with fire and the results have spontaneous and subtle qualities. Inspiration comes from nature and felt experience - slow walks, Tai Chi.

Our large garden inspires small sculptural work, usually in stoneware for durability. A model of Ganesh made for an old cherry tree with a hollow space in the trunk.  Peace Doves came about for 'Peace Corner' after a slow garden walk with an artist friend. The intensity of garden birds song during lockdown led to making small garden birds attached to clay vessels. 'River Bowls', were a response to frequent lockdown walks along Orford river path.

'Giraffe Vases' and 'Tiger Candle Pots' came from strong feelings about endangered animals which found expression in these small pieces which can also be used for flowers / candles.

'Poempots' series arose from a chance remark by a poet friend, 'that would make a good poempot!'. The collaboration led to four 'Poempots' - clay forms to hold a poem or quote. The collaboration extended to include printers / calligraphers.

Having had many years of making thrown domestic stoneware, there is now great joy in free, playful, exploratory making, often incorporating connections with others work or the world of nature. All these relationships in turn feed into my more solitary making. I like moving between the various inspirations and communications.
